Warning Signs Your Cooling System Needs Attention
Don’t ignore these common indicators that your vehicle may need service:
Coolant leaks underneath your vehicle
This is commonly caused by a failing component within the cooling system, such as a damaged radiator, cracked hose, loose connection, leaking water pump, or worn gasket. Over time, heat, pressure, and normal wear can cause these parts to deteriorate, allowing coolant to escape and collect beneath the vehicle. If left unaddressed, coolant leaks can lead to engine overheating and potential engine damage.
Sweet or unusual odors coming from the engine area
A sweet or unusual odor coming from the engine area is often a sign of a coolant leak within the cooling system. Engine coolant has a distinct sweet smell, and when it leaks onto hot engine components, it can produce noticeable odors. Common sources include leaking hoses, the radiator, water pump, or engine gaskets. If not repaired, coolant leaks can lead to overheating and potential engine damage.
Low coolant levels that require frequent refilling
This is a sign of a leak or other malfunction within the cooling system. Coolant may be escaping through damaged hoses, a leaking radiator, a faulty water pump, a worn gasket, or other compromised components. In some cases, coolant may also be consumed internally due to engine gasket failure. Frequent coolant loss should be diagnosed and repaired promptly to prevent engine overheating and serious engine damage.
Visible corrosion around hoses, clamps, or the radiator
This is often a sign of coolant seepage or prolonged exposure to moisture and contaminants. Small coolant leaks can leave behind deposits that gradually corrode metal components and connections over time. Corrosion may weaken cooling system parts, contribute to leaks, and reduce overall system reliability. Prompt inspection and repair can help prevent further deterioration and potential cooling system failures.
Steam coming from under the hood
This is an indication that the engine is overheating due to a problem within the cooling system. Common causes include low coolant levels, a coolant leak, a malfunctioning thermostat, a failed water pump, or a damaged radiator. When coolant escapes or is unable to circulate properly, engine temperatures can rise, causing coolant to boil and produce visible steam from the engine compartment.
The engine temperature gauge running higher than normal
This means the engine is not being cooled efficiently. Common causes are low coolant levels, coolant leaks, a malfunctioning thermostat, a failing water pump, a clogged radiator, or cooling fan issues. When the cooling system cannot regulate engine temperature, heat builds up and causes the gauge reading to rise above its normal operating range. This can lead to engine overheating and costly repairs.
Poor heater performance during colder weather
Poor heater performance during colder weather is often caused by an issue within the vehicle’s cooling system. Low coolant levels, air trapped in the cooling system, a clogged heater core, or a malfunctioning thermostat can prevent sufficient hot coolant from circulating through the heater core. As a result, the heating system may be unable to produce adequate warm air inside the cabin, especially during cold weather conditions.
Frequent overheating during traffic or long drives
This is caused by a cooling system that is unable to effectively dissipate engine heat under increased operating demands. Causes are low coolant levels, coolant leaks, a failing radiator fan, a clogged radiator, a malfunctioning thermostat, or a worn water pump. These conditions can reduce coolant circulation or airflow through the radiator, allowing engine temperatures to rise and increase the risk of overheating during extended periods of driving.

Great guys. Took good care of me
These guys are super helpful and detailed- much better than the dealer I used to use, my Toyota is getting old, but they are keeping it going – keeping track of and prioritizing the issues to keep me me on the road.
The Art of Maintenance crew was so amazing to work with! This was my first time taking my car to them and they exceeded my expectations. They are friendly, timely and precise with their diagnosis of problems. They gave me a full detailed list of things that look good on my car, things that might need attention and things that are urgent to fix. This was so helpful for me and I never felt any pressure to do work on my car on things that can wait. I will definitely be coming back for my regular maintenance and any car needs! Thank you!
Had a great experience at Art of Maintenance. Staff was very friendly and knowledgable and accommodated me the same day. They provide you with a report as well when you get your oil change of any other items you may want to address. That being said, they aren’t trying to upsell you on anything which is much appreciated.
Art of Maintenance is a great shop. They are professional, efficient, and great to work with. I bring both my vehicles to them and am quite happy with their work
These guys are great. They are honest, quick and they do good work. Customer service is outstanding as well!
They worked on my 2003 lexus ES 300 thanks for the work that was done
great group of guys that do incredible work! will definitely be back
We went to AOM for what we thought was a power steering problem on our 2006 Toyota 4Runner. That’s what they diagnosed and replaced the rack and pinion. What we didn’t expect was that, on picking up the vehicle, the rear wiper would not work and it had since we bought the car last year. Returned it to Kevin who was able to re-program the wiper relay. Now the front end is quiet and the rear window can have rain cleared off. Thanks, guys.
They had my car done in a day. They were professional and even helped me finance the repairs when I didn’t have enough funds to cover all the costs. I will be using Art of Maintenance for any future repairs and preventative maintenance. Kevin was professional and kind.
Great service! Short turn around time.
The team at Art of Maintenance is fantastic. They treated my car as if it was their own. One shop told me I needed new brakes and I brought to Art of Maintenance for second quote and they said I was good for a while longer on brakes even though it meant loss of business for them. They will be my new auto shop moving forward!
