When It’s Time for a Check
Your car gives subtle clues when your 4WD system isn’t working at its best. Paying attention early can save you from costly repairs down the road. These signs might seem small, but they’re your vehicle’s way of asking for attention before something major fails. If you notice any of the signs below, it’s time to let our technicians take a closer look.
Difficulty engaging or disengaging 4WD mode
Difficulty engaging or disengaging 4WD mode can be caused by issues such as a faulty transfer case actuator, damaged shift linkage, low or contaminated transfer case fluid, worn drivetrain components, or electrical problems within the 4WD control system.
Unusual grinding or clicking sounds
Unusual grinding or clicking sounds while using four-wheel drive can be caused by worn transfer case gears, damaged front or rear differential components, failing CV joints, improperly engaged 4WD hubs, or low or contaminated transfer case fluid.
Uneven traction or slipping on wet terrain
This can be caused by worn or improperly inflated tires, a malfunctioning transfer case or differential, uneven tire sizes, faulty locking hubs, or issues with the vehicle’s traction control system that prevent power from being distributed evenly to all wheels.
Warning lights or dashboard alerts
Warning lights or dashboard alerts while using four-wheel drive can be triggered by a faulty transfer case actuator, malfunctioning wheel speed sensors, electrical or wiring issues, low transfer case fluid, or a problem within the vehicle’s 4WD control module.

We took our 2013 Chevy Sonic 1.4L, Turbo, to AOM for an inspection of output shaft seal & oil change. We chose them because we volunteer nearby, and they could work on our car while we volunteer. They provided us with an inspection report that included pictures. After reviewing the report and going over the potential charges, we authorized them to complete the recommended services, which included oil change, new spark plugs, brake fluid flush, fuel injection service, output shaft seal replacement, drain and refill manual transmission fluid and replacing all shocks and strut assemblies and rear springs. This cost $2,818.00. We were in a bit of shock at the price, but that being said, this car has never given us a bit of trouble since buying it new, so we decided this money was well spent. We have had all the manufacturer-recommended maintenance done at the dealer all along. A dealer may have charged as much or more. The services performed by AOM were needed as evidenced by the pictures they took during the inspection and during the repairs themselves. Our car is running like new, and the repairs are guaranteed for 5 years, 50,000 miles NATIONWIDE. So, yes, it was expensive and worth it. We feel we got our money’s worth. Thank you, Ryan and Kevin.
Got me in and out quick! Great shop!
Excellent communication and servic.
I just moved into the city for grad school and had been shopping around for a mechanic for my 4runner. A quick google search pulled up a few in the neighborhood, and out of the five that I called Art of Maintenance piqued my interest from the first time they picked up the phone. The staff was friendly and respectful; which in my opinion is a great first step in looking for a reliable, trustworthy auto shop. The shop is well organized and clean, I was greeted and checked in quickly. I had a minor repair that needed to be done and they got me in and out of there fast. I plan to go to Art of Maintenance in the future for all my auto needs.
They were quick to get us in and resolve the problem.
I was referred to Art of Maintenance by a family member and I was not disappointed! The crew here worked quickly and efficiently. They are super friendly and helpful and they make a great effort to communicate well. I will definitely be going back with other auto needs!
Great service and friendly staff. Helped me get some answers on a mysterious slow tire leak and recycled my rotors which had been living in my trunk for months!
Definitely would recommend their work and customer service. Thanks Art of Maintenance!
The shop was amazing got me in took care what I needed fast and Kevin was great
They where able to get me in the same day , very freindly and I will ne back, this is not my first time and will not be my last. Very professional , accurate and honest
Helpful in identitying the most important repairs, i felt listened to and was well informed of the diagnosis cost in advance.
Great service.
Been taking my car here for a few years for oil changes, etc., and it’s always gone well. Noticed one of my tires was dangerously low on air today and drove it straight there. Even though it was almost closing time, the folks at Art of Maintenance pulled my car into the garage and thoroughly checked and fixed my tires. I really appreciated their quick service to make sure my car was safe to drive.
